Pollutant accumulation in road mitigation tunnels for amphibians: A multisite comparison on an ignored but important issue

چکیده
Underpasses or road tunnels are increasingly installed to reconnect habitats and ensure safe wildlife passage, thus preventing habitat fragmentation caused by roads mortality from collisions with vehicles. In the UK, such underpasses regularly implemented for amphibians especially protected great crested newt, Triturus cristatus . However, also a key source of environmental pollutants including trace metals, salt, petroleum diesel hydrocarbons these might impact mitigation structures where funnelled to, yet extent implications almost never quantified in relation this aspect, despite recognised sensitivity chemical pollutants. Sediments were analysed four amphibian tunnel sites across UK compared natural soil formations at local reference determine whether contaminants indeed accumulating within tunnels. Three potential (copper, lead, total hydrocarbons) found greater concentrations underpass sediments than respective three locations, while one (zinc) was all studied sites. Aggregated sediment pH value significantly study several instances reached values that exceeded thresholds concern. Despite large geographic area covered significant site differences absolute similar sites, suggesting pollution sources pathways. These results suggest ecological could be pathway surfaces it is recommended focussed monitoring maintenance enacted given their short long-term impacts on currently unknown. Potential management options include regular jet-washing underpasses, alternatively, pre- post-implementation modifications designs should aim minimise surfaces.

Environmental sanitation: An ignored issue in India
40 Dear sir, In general, environmental sanitation covers arrangements for drainage of rainwater and effluents, collection and disposal of garbage and removal of human excreta. The World Health organization (WHO) defines environmental sanitation as “the control of all those factors in man’s physical environment, which exercise or may exercise a deleterious effect on his physical development, hea...
متن کاملMRS Shimming: An Important Point Which Should not be Ignored
Introduction: Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a well-known device for analyzing the biological fluids metabolically. Obtaining accurate and reliable information via MRS needs a homogeneous magnetic field in order to provide well-defined peaks and uniform water suppression. There are lots of reasons which can disturb the magnetic field homogeneity which can be corrected by a proc...

BACKGROUND Trichoepithelioma is a rare benign skin lesion that originates from hair follicles. Trichoepitheliomas are mostly seen in the scalp, nose, forehead, and upper lip. METHODS We present a large family of Iranian origin with 15 individuals affected with multiple familial trichoepithelioma in four generations, and treated with three different methods. RESULTS Trichoepithelioma is his...

متن کاملLay health worker attrition: important but often ignored.
Lay health workers are key to achieving universal health-care coverage, therefore measuring worker attrition and identifying its determinants should be an integral part of any lay health worker programme. Both published and unpublished research on lay health workers has largely focused on the types of interventions they can deliver effectively. This is an imperative since the main objective of ...
